Sometimes referred to as “The Academy Awards of Water,” the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting brings together some of the purest and most carefully sourced bottled waters in the world, then pits them against each other in a no-holds-barred battle. Or, to be slightly more accurate: a thorough sampling and fine-tuned rating of the event’s many refreshing entries.
Since the tasting’s inception in 1991, the distinguished judges of Berkeley Springs have honored Mountain Valley with a whopping 19 awards, including four nods for “Best in the World” for our still and sparkling spring water offerings. Best bottled water — because of our history
In 1871, brothers Peter and John Greene took over a small company called Lockett’s Spring Water and turned it into Mountain Valley Spring Water. The brothers, who were also both pharmacists, recognized that there was something special about the purity and minerality of this water. They believed others would taste the Mountain Valley difference, too.
By 1928, Mountain Valley was delivering its purely delectable spring water from the cliffs of Maine to the beaches of California, making us the first bottled water company to deliver coast to coast across the U.S.
In 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower started drinking Mountain Valley Spring Water on the advice of his physician. Other famed Mountain Valley fans include world heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis, baseball legend Babe Ruth, and The King himself, Mr. Elvis Presley.
But the Mountain Valley love extends well beyond the human realm. Our, perhaps, most legendary fan is none other than a Triple Crown-winning thoroughbred by the name of Secretariat. The horse drank gallons and gallons of Mountain Valley before and after each of his historic races in 1973. At Secretariat’s third and final race that year, the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, New York, the horse’s spring water was delivered in person by former Mountain Valley New York President John G. Scott and his daughter Anne. A story the family will never forget.
