New York City Water Delivery: Mountain Valley’s history in the Big Apple
Mountain Valley has been delivering water to homes and offices in New York City for more than 125 years. The Mountain Valley Spring Water-NYC connection dates at least to the 1890s, when Mountain Valley established a distribution center in Philadelphia to allow for water delivery throughout the northeast. By 1908, Mountain Valley had also set up offices in Chicago and, you guessed it, New York City.
Legend has it that Mountain Valley’s NYC office was the result of a chance meeting by two very different businessmen who bonded on a train leaving Hot Springs, Arkansas for the Big Apple. In the train’s dining car, both people brought bottles of Mountain Valley Spring Water to their respective tables. The coincidence led to much conversation and an agreement for a 50-50 partnership for a Mountain Valley Spring Water franchise in New York. Upon exchanging business cards, media mogul William Randolph Hearst discovered that his new partner was the well-known gambler Richard Canfield, a man against whom his newspapers were conducting a fierce campaign.
Despite their differences, Hearst and Canfield’s business plan moved forward. By the end of 1908, the first cases of Mountain Valley Spring Water shipped to the new Hearst/Canfield distributorship and then to homes and businesses across the five boroughs.
