Celebrating Local Flavor and Resilience: A Fall Harvest Event at Smoky Mountain River Ranch

Just outside of Asheville, in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, Smoky Mountain River Ranch recently played host to an unforgettable fall harvest event in collaboration with our longtime partner Outstanding in the Field—a traveling dinner series that champions farm-to-table dining at its finest. A heritage-breed Mangalitsa pig farm, this beautiful 100 acre ranch and camping destination sits on a half mile of river among the rolling hills of the region.

At the center of the evening was Chef William Dissen, a Mountain Valley Culinary Ambassador, cookbook author and the visionary behind Asheville's beloved The Market Place. A staunch advocate for supporting local farmers, purveyors, and artisans, Chef Dissen crafted a menu that celebrated the best of what his hometown has to offer. From earthy wild mushroom tarts to perfectly wood-grilled beef sirloin, each dish was not just food but a story of Asheville’s vibrant agricultural community.

As guests sipped locally sourced wine, hydrated with Mountain Valley Spring Water, and savored each course, it was easy to feel the deep connection between food, community, and place. The event was a true testament to the resilience and beauty of the Asheville region and the remarkable people who call it home.

However, this fall harvest was also a reminder that the beloved region—and the families, businesses, and individuals that make up this vibrant community—are going through a tough time. Shortly after this event, the area was impacted by Hurricane Helene, leaving many in need of support as they begin the long road to recovery.

Despite the challenges, the spirit of the region remains unshaken. Asheville’s farmers, chefs, artists, and small business owners have shown immense strength and determination in the face of adversity, and they need our support now more than ever.
