Drinking alkaline water can be one of the simplest and easiest ways to improve your health. And this time of year, simpler and easier are what everyone needs.
As 2024 begins to unfurl, our plans for new, improved, faster, leaner, healthier selves can start to unravel. New routines can be hard to establish and stick with, especially when those routines involve carving out time to hit the gym, or go for a run, or drive to the yoga studio. While activity is an essential pillar of good health, another such pillar is water. And while good old-fashioned H2O is wonderful, new research has shown that alkaline water may be even better.
The beauty of drinking more water to improve health is that you can do it just about anytime and just about anywhere. If you miss a spin class, help make up for it by drinking water. If you can’t get to the pool, drink your water instead of swimming in it. And if that water has a slight alkalinity, as Mountain Valley Spring Water naturally does, well then, all the merrier (and healthier).
The health benefits of alkaline water have only started to come into focus in recent years, and the science is promising. From balancing the acidity of processed foods to helping with digestion and blood sugar, alkaline water has lots of healthful potential. But we are getting ahead of ourselves.
First things first …
What is alkaline water?
Alkaline water is water with a pH higher than 7.
As you may (or may not) recall from high school science class, the pH scale ranges from zero to 14. Smack dab in the middle of that scale, you have distilled water at a 100% neutral pH of 7.0. In the zero to 6.9 range there are acids, such as coffee, lemon juice and stomach bile. The stronger the acid, the lower its pH will be. On the other end of the scale are the bases, or alkalis, which include baking soda, ammonia and bleach. As a base’s pH gets higher, it becomes stronger.
Distilled water, with its neutral pH of 7.0, is made by boiling any and all impurities from water. This is, technically, water in its purest state. Distilled water is two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen, and absolutely nothing else. This is why distilled water does not taste good. While distilled water is potable, it lacks the trace minerals and nutrients that give great waters, such as Mountain Valley Spring Water, their rounded, crisp and thirst-quenching flavors. Distilled water is manufactured. It’s not how water occurs naturally.
The best and most award-winning waters, ahem, that’s Mountain Valley Spring Water, are often slightly alkaline.
Is alkaline water natural?
It can be. But that depends on the source.
While many alkaline waters are created in factories with human assistance, this isn’t always the case. In nature, spring waters can be alkaline with no human intervention. That’s because spring waters become infused with the minerals through which they pass.
In the case of Mountain Valley, our spring water started as snow and rain that fell from the skies above the Ouachita Mountains of the Southern U.S. some 4,000 years ago. That water filtered deep into the earth, where it collected in natural, granite-lined aquifers. As those aquifers filled, the water pushed its way back to the surface as natural springs. Along that journey, Mountain Valley Spring Water passed through layers of limestone, quartz and marble that naturally infused our water with traces of magnesium, calcium and potassium. These minerals also give our water a naturally alkaline pH of 7.3 to 7.8.
What are the health benefits of alkaline water?
Research has shown alkaline water can be beneficial in many ways. Drinking alkaline water has been linked to lower blood sugar levels as well as improved cholesterol and triglycerides. Some believe that alkaline water can help balance the processed and overly acidic foods that have come to dominate modern U.S. diets.
Researchers have used alkaline water to help treat patients with gastrointestinal disorders, such as gastric hyperacidity and diarrhea. Drinking alkaline water has also been shown to help with reflux disorders.
More benefits of drinking alkaline water:
- May help athletes recover more quickly from high-intensity, dehydrating workouts
- May help to suppress free-radical production
- Can improve quality of life for those suffering from bladder stones
- Can help with late-stage kidney disease
Drinking alkaline water isn’t the only way it can benefit your health. Alkaline water can help in other ways, too. Bathing in alkaline water can improve skin conditions. Bathing in alkaline water may also reduce sun damage and help protect the skin against cancer.
Are there risks to drinking alkaline water?
With alkaline water, there is a fine line between healthful levels of alkalinity and potentially dangerous ones. As we mentioned earlier, lightly alkaline substances, such as Mountain Valley Spring Water, are perfectly safe to consume as often as you like. However, highly alkaline waters — those with a pH of 9 or slightly above — have been shown to irritate the skin and eyes of animals. When a water’s pH is greater than 10, it’s almost certain to induce skin and eye irritation in humans and can even cause gastrointestinal distress in people with sensitive stomachs.
With a natural pH of 7.3 to 7.8, Mountain Valley Spring Water hits the alkaline sweet spot. Ours is a lightly alkaline water you can add to any part of your day. And Mountain Valley just might be the easiest way to kickstart a healthy New Year routine.
