Turning on our water in our homes is so second nature that we just don't have enough time in the day to think about what all is involved with delivering water to our homes.

A New York Times article written by Charles Duhigg talks about our aging water delivery infrastucture and how pipes are breaking down across many U.S. towns. Some key quotes from this article include

“We’re relying on water systems built by our great-grandparents, and no one wants to pay for the decades we’ve spent ignoring them,” said Jeffrey K. Griffiths, a professor atTufts University and a member of the E.P.A.’s National Drinking Water Advisory Council.

“There’s a lot of evidence that people are getting sick,” he added. “But because everything is out of sight, no one really understands how bad things have become.”

Apparently some analysts consider bottled water sales a "leading economic indicator."

Hope of UK recovery springs from rising sales of bottled water

Published Date: 04 November 2009

The thirst for bottled water is returning, with analysts suggesting it is a sign of recovery. As the ultimate discretionary purchase, bottled water sales have suffered in recent years, as recession-hit consumers reverted to tap water.

However, new research from analysts Mintel reveals that, as consumer confidence returns, so is the popularity of bottled water. Jonny Forsyth, Mintel senior drinks analyst, said: "Consumer confidence is inextricably linked with bottled water consumption. When the decline in confidence began in late 2007, bottled water became one of the easiest products for cautious consumers to sacrifice.

"At around 250 times cheaper than bottled water, tap water suddenly seemed a much more sensible option.

"However, with consumer confidence rising over recent months, consumers have started to loosen their purse strings and bottled water has been one of the beneficiaries."

The bottled water market more than doubled its sales between 1997 and 2007 to reach 2.5 billion litres. However, as consumer confidence dropped, worsened by wet summers, volume sales in the UK fell by 11 per cent between 2006 and 2008.

Environmental criticism added to predictions that the market was in terminal decline.

However, Mintel's research shows the decline in sales slowed to just 1 per cent last year, with the British drinking 2.3 billion litres of bottled water in a market worth £1.9 billion.

Mintel expects growth from 2011 onwards and a return to sales of 2.5 billion litres a year by 2014. Nonetheless, said Mintel, only one in ten UK consumers consider bottled water to offer value for money.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Federal environmental regulators took action against 11 small Utah waer systems over lack of water monitoring of contaminants. You can read the full article here.

What do you think the people making a career criticizing bottled water would say if these violators were bottled water companies instead of tap water systems. The FDA, unlike the EPA, has a "zero tolerance" standard for E. coli., and they would have immediately shut down a bottled water company.

Thanks to a Fort Smith, Arkansas consumer who sent me the notice below he received from his local water utility.

The Public Notice highlights a major difference between municipal water and bottled water.  Regulators of bottled water have zero tolerance for bottlers violating contaminant levels of lead and an incident like this would make major headlines and be the lead story in countless television news programs.  Note the Fort Smith Utility says boiling the water and filters won't remove the lead and say it is "okay" to use bottled water.

Mountain Valley Spring Company is proud to have recently played an important role in The Nature Conservancy’s continuing restoration of the Middle Fork of the Saline River in Arkansas!

canoing on the Saline River in ArkansasMountain Valley’s springs are located on almost 2,000 undisturbed acres in watershed of the Middle Fork. This river has been designated by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality as an “Extraordinary Resource Waterbody” and an “Ecologically Sensitive Waterway.” As part of the restoration process, the Nature Conservancy required rocks to halt erosion of the river bank and improve habitat for the many species of wildlife using the river. The Conservancy approached Mountain Valley about donating the required rock which is easily accessible and plentiful on company property and naturally, we were more than pleased to assist in such a worthy project.

Mountain Valley salutes the many good works of The Nature Conservancy and wishes it great success in its continuing progress on improving the Saline River and entire Ouachita River system.
